Massage involves the manipulation of muscles and other soft tissues. It is beneficial in treating a wide range of conditions, including muscle spasms and pain, soreness from injury and headaches. Massage works to relieve pain in a number of ways: by promoting muscle relaxation; by increasing lymphatic circulation and thereby reducing inflammation; by breaking up scar tissue and by promoting drainage of the sinus fluids.
Massage is not for people with phlebitis, high blood pressure or any other vascular disorder. Massage should not be performed on individuals with malignant or infectious conditions.
Types of Massage:
Deep Tissue Massage: Used to release chronic muscular tension, applied with great pressure and on deeper muscles than classic Swedish massage. Generally focuses on specific problem areas.
Neuromuscular Massage: a form of deep tissue massage which concentraes on a specific muscle. Throught the use of concentrated fingure pressure, sensitive ”trigger points” are released and blood flow is increased.
Reflexology: Originated in China. Reflexologists apply pressure to different spots on the feet, hands and ears that correlate with the bosy’s organs. This opens a channel for energy to flow to the affected part of the body. There may be pain when pressure is applied to some spots and in some cases it is necessary to use prolonged pressure.
Reiki: In Japanese ‘reiki’ means ‘universal life enery’. The practise of reiki promotes a return to health through ”wholeness”. The treatment consists of a health proffessional gently placing his or her hands on a relaxed body. The practiitioner’s hands touch a variety of places, such as the head, chest, abdomen and back to promote energy flow through the body. For some people this treatment promotes deep relaxation while to others it may be invignorating. Reiki can relieve stress, empower goals, overcome obstacles and heal illness.
Sports massage: a combination of kneading, passive stretching, and range of deep-tissue motions, sports massage is designed to ease muscle strain and promote flexibility. It is most effective when applied before or after exercising.
Swedish massage: this technique uses kneading, stroking, tapping and shaking to indice the body to relax. Swedish massage can akso relieve soreness and swelling as well as prommote rehabiliation after an injury.
